My name is Chris Cunliffe and I’m the owner of Internet Marketing Strategies, a small Australian Internet Marketing business. I live in Brisbane, Australia while the rest of the Internet Marketing Strategies team is comprised of contractors that include marketing experts and website developers, that are based in various locations around the world (the US, UK and the Philippines).

My History with Websites and the Internet

I’m 25 years old and have been building websites from the moment I got an Internet connection back in 1998 (late to the party – I know). In the earlier years, building websites and marketing them to the world was just a hobby, but that soon turned into a passion, and by 2006 I decided to go into business and have been running that business full time ever since.

My earlier websites were internationally-based sites centred around topics on gaming, music and television shows and were monetised primarily through Google AdSense with secondary sources of income including affiliate sales, private deals, other contextual advertising and occasional consulting gigs to family and friends. However in recent years I have focused more on creating niche websites specialising in Australian-based products and services.

How Internet Marketing Strategies Came About

It started off with an offer to consult for my father’s business on selecting an Australian-based web designer.  It was only after sitting through over half a dozen web designer interviews that I realised how much snake oil was being sold in the industry with the majority of web designers I interviewed being better salesmen than they were web designers!

In addition to this, there were also a lot of Australian web design and search marketing companies that were providing very outdated products and implementing very dangerous marketing strategies.

Ultimately it was my disenchantment with the Australian web design and internet marketing industry that led me to taking a more active and hands-on role with my father’s business and its internet marketing strategies. The success with this endeavour really opened my eyes to the potential of developing sites tailored for businesses in the Australian market. So moving into the Australian market came about very naturally.

I’m delighted to say that since my involvement with the online lead generating part of my father’s business back in 2008, he has managed to take his revenues earned through online sources from essentially nothing to well over $1 million a year.

Internet Marketing Strategies aims to practice what it preaches by developing websites in niche Australian industries for its own portfolio of websites. Using safe and highly effective internet marketing strategies to generate lead and advertising sales, our ultimate vision is to sell these websites to businesses that can extract greater value from them.

We look at our website portfolio as online assets that we are constantly trying to develop, refine and extract as much value from as possible. Our websites are not just stagnant billboards; we see them as lead-generating, revenue-producing sales funnels. They are the sales reps of our businesses that works 24/7.

The Purpose of This Website

This site intends to be a reliable resource of unbiased information on how to get the most value out of your website using tried and true internet marketing strategies without fluff or gimmicks.

We also use this site to talk about what we are doing in our own business, discuss the latest developments in the industry, as well as share how to guides that whilst primarily developed to be a resource for future employees of our business, will no doubt double as great resources for you, our readers.

Why We Don’t Consult and Contract Out

I firmly believe that with the internet in its current state, those with the marketing skills that are worth utilising are not available for hire. With the automation, liberation and scale that the internet provides, so many quality web developers and internet marketers need only turn to major ad agencies like Google AdSense, affiliate networks or even private ad deals to make very good money online without the hassles that come with obtaining and managing numerous clients.

As a business, we have opted not to become website developers or consultants. This was due to the fact that the majority of businesses are not experts in search engine optimisation or internet marketing strategies, and as such we find it rather ineffective to deal with most clients that have the tendency to dictate how their website should function, which is usually counter-productive to the outcomes they are looking to achieve (generate business and make money).

This doesn’t come as a surprise; however I personally feel frustrated and discontented knowing that fulfilling client wishes can oftentimes undermine their business objectives. The alternative of educating and then selling established websites to the decision-makers has become the more profitable option that carries far less stress.

Some people might not have a problem with delivering something that is asked for, no matter how unvaluable they believe the service to be, but I’m someone who prides themselves on not taking advantage of other people’s ignorance. I make sure I provide at least as much value for what I’m being remunerated for, nor do I find any satisfaction in selling website revisions to businesses that change their mind about their previous requests once they become aware that it’s hurting the website’s profitability.

So given this dilemma I decided to attempt to turn the industry on its head. Rather than build websites requested by businesses, I decided to build websites that businesses would want to buy off me. This way we were able to develop sites that were successful using simple yet effective internet marketing strategies without needing to educate businesses about what we do and why we do things in a certain way. More importantly, businesses are acquiring a complete and fully-functional website, at a fair price, which successfully eliminates a substantial amount of risk from their investment.
